HEAVY METAL

Two teenage Palestinian women are amongst the best athletes at a weightlifting club in a refugee camp. Adla and We’am's are determined to qualify for an international competition in Qatar. To book their ticket, they must perform in front of loved ones at their club. The team knows they can dazzle the crowd with formidable strength. But injuries, emotions, and questionable decisions threaten their chances. Despite the challenges, the tight-knight community provides love and support - whatever the result. Produced by BAFTA-winning and Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Hind Shoufani, the project is the second film co-directed by Edward Knowles and Timo Bruun. Heavy Metal is part of Sports Explains the World, a series from Meadowlark Media. Each film in the series provides intimate, character-driven stories rooted in sports that deliver larger messages about humanity and the pivotal times we live in.
